IRA-Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) allow individuals age 70 ½ and older to give up to $100,000 tax-free, directly from their Traditional or Inherited IRA to a 501c(3) non-profit organization. The amount withdrawn may satisfy all or part of their Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) requirement up to $100,000.

Gift Appreciated Securities

If you have appreciated securities with long term capital gains, consider gifting the securities directly to the Free Clinic. Such gifts generate a double tax benefit. In addition to receiving an income tax charitable deduction for the full market value of the securities, you escape potential capital gains taxes if you sold the security. In order to qualify for this tax benefit, the property must have been held for more than one year.

To gift securities to the Free Clinic, sign a letter of authorization to transfer the securities from your brokerage account to the Free Clinic’s brokerage account. All brokerage firms have this form. Contact the Free Clinic’s Executive Director at 360-450-3044 for information on where to transfer the securities. We will provide the Free Clinic’s brokerage name, the account number and the DTC number. You must keep track of your tax lots. The Free Clinic will verify the total proceeds when the stock is sold and report that amount to you as your gift.

Leave a Legacy

You know how important it is to support children and adults who need basic health care.  With charitable giving as part of your estate plan, you can continue to make a difference for uninsured individuals in the community after your lifetime. Some of the ways to consider planned giving include:

Bequests:
A bequest is a gift made to the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington (Free Clinic) through your will and is a simple way to make a significant gift to ensure compassionate care for those in need.  Bequests can be for a specific dollar amount or for a percentage of your estate.  Your estate will receive an estate tax charitable deduction for the full amount of your cash bequest to the Free Clinic or for the fair market value of other donated assets.

Retirement Accounts and Annuities:
Did you know that 60-80% (or more) of your retirement assets may be taxed if you leave them to your heirs at your death?  Naming the Free Clinic as a beneficiary of your IRA or other qualified retirement plan or annuity is easy to do.  Simply request a change of beneficiary form from your retirement plan administrator or insurance agent.
You will maintain complete control over the asset while you are living, and upon your death the remaining assets in your account pass to the Free Clinic free of probate and both estate and income taxes.

Life Insurance:
A gift of your life insurance policy is an excellent way to support the Free Clinic. If you have a life insurance policy that has outlasted its original purpose, consider making a gift of your insurance policy to support health care for the uninsured.

If you decide to leave a legacy to the Free Clinic, the information you will need is listed below.  If you or your professionals need more information, contact the Clinic’s Executive Director at 360-450-3044.
